Emotional scenes at community meet
DUBAI — Emotional scenes were seen yesterday at a large gathering of the Pakistani community which was mourning the untimely death of former prime minister and Pakistan People's Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
Hundreds of community members assembled at the Pakistan Sports and Recreation Club in Dubai in the afternoon to offer Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza, recite the Holy Quran and offer Fateha prayers for the departed soul.
These included supporters of various political parties — the PPP, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz Group) and the Awami National Party — and senior businessmen, social workers and professionals, among others.
Pakistan Consul-General Abdul Hameed and Counsellor Naveed Illahi attended the meeting organised by the Pakistan Association Dubai. Hameed also signed the condolence book at the club.
PPP supporters were visibly shaken. They cried, hugged each other and remembered the eight years that they had spent close to their leader while she was living in Dubai.
"We have lost everything," they said with tears flowing down their cheeks.
They remembered the last birthday of Benazir Bhutto that was celebrated here. "How could we know that it will actually be her last birthday!"
Chaudhry Abdul Hameed, a prominent hotelier, said, "I hope that the nation will give her the respect that is due to a martyr and follow in her footsteps unitedly."
The entire world is expressing its sadness and anger over the murder of Benazir Bhutto, Yousuf Butt, a PPP supporter from Ajman, said.
Chaudhary Noor H. Tanvir and Chaudhary Mohammad Altaf, chief coordinator and president UAE, respectively, of the PML-N, said in a joint statement, "We strongly condemn the murder of Benazir Bhutto. In fact, this is a loss for Pakistan. This has happened only due to the failure and negligence of the Musharraf government.
“Better security measures would have avoided this incident. The government should accept its failure and resign and postpone the election immediately. A new government must be formed which must organise the elections.
“As Pakistanis, we should realise and struggle for our rights. Otherwise we will suffer a very big loss."
