Punishment needed

WISH we didn't have to state this, but today we might as well spit it out. There are people amidst us who are giving the city of Dubai a bad name, and a splattered look — those among us who go around spitting on the streets.

Stop at a traffic redlight, and the next thing you see is a car door opening and a head popping out to send a stream of spit on to the road. It is a regular sight. Then you have these men on foot who do it everywhere, on the road, outside shopfronts and restaurants, waiting at the bus-stop, just loitering around. It is as if they cannot do without sending saliva splattering all over and around where they walk and stand.

Those among them who chew tobacco and betel take the cake. They are the real bad ones. These people don't understand that keeping the city clean is as important as keeping their homes clean.

The authorities should make it a crime if somebody spits on the road, and in public. Only a deterrent will make a difference.
