The ceremony organised by the Environment Authority marked the conclusion of the environmental awareness programmes that targeted school students for the academic year 2006-2007.

Present at the function were Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary-General of the Authority, Mohammed Salem Al Dhahiri, Director of the Abu Dhabi Education Zone, and Dr Naguib Zafrani, Director of Shell, sponsor of the event, and a number of government officials.

The programmes conducted by the authority included land and sea trips, lectures, field trips, clean-up campaigns and exhibitions.

The orientation programmes aimed at upgrading the standard of environmental awareness among teachers focusing on ecological issues such as water, waste, alternative sources for energy, desertification, biological diversity and pollution, Al Mansouri said.

As many as 2,270 students from 45 schools attended the lectures.

The summer activities and visits were not restricted to only lectures on environment. Competitions and environment-related games also were included in the programmes, he said.
