According to the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence, the fire damaged the four depots but none of the workers were injured.

“The swift action by the Civil Defence firefighters with the support of Abu Dhabi Ports Company, controlled the blaze from spreading to other nearby storehouses, thus preventing huge financial losses and saving the lives of several workers,” said Civil Defence Director-General Colonel Mohammed Abdullah Al Nuaimi.

The fire completely gutted two warehouses, while the other two were partially damaged.

According to workers in the nearby markets, it was around 1pm or a little after that when they saw flames rising from the warehouses and the area was covered with thick black smoke.

“However, soon the area was cordoned off to allow firefighters and rescue teams of the police to enter the free zone premises without any delay. They were very fast to put out the fire,” said a vegetable vendor in the nearby fruit and vegetable market.

Al Nuaimi said the Operations Room of the Civil Defence got a call at around 1:30pm that a fire broke out in the free zone, which is outside Port Zayed.

He explained: “Civil Defence firefighters and rescue teams from the Port area were already there with the additional support coming from all the nearby firebrigades, ambulances, rescue and safety teams, reaching the scene in a record time and managing to control the fire also in a record time.

“There was good cooperation and swift action by the Abu Dhabi Ports Company to help control the fire so quickly. All the other depots in the free zone were saved from being gutted. However, two were completely destroyed and the other two partially. By the grace of God there were no injuries.”

Two affected warehouses, according to Al Nuaimi, contained tyres, plastic products and other inflammable materials that served as fuel to the fire leading it to spread fast.

The official further added an on-spot investigation to find the cause of the blaze is already under way, that, he added, is also tasked to locate the spot from where the fire started.

“A further investigation will be carried out to get all the details. Experts and police investigators are there to get the initial reports,” he explained.
