16,447 traffic violations in the capital

ABU DHABI — The Traffic and Patrol department of Abu Dhabi Police issued as many as 16,447 traffic violation tickets during a special drive between April 8-14, a majority of them relating to over-speeding, wrong parking, and obstructing the flow of traffic.

Captain Saif Al Darei, Head of Investigations and Traffic Violations department, which issues traffic violation tickets for over-speeding, said 10,645 tickets were issued as a result of police radar detection. About 1,200 motorists were booked for driving at extreme speeds in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs.

A total of 15,814 of these violation tickets were issued in absentia. Traffic violation tickets were issued for a whole range of minor-to-major offences including: For not wearing a safety belt (2,041), wrong parking (1,082), and Obstructing the flow of traffic (513) and 344 for using the mobile phone while driving and 43 for jumping the red light.
