These are the findings of the School Health Report of 2007-2008, which was released by the Ministry of Heath (MoH) during a workshop on “Students’ Health Protection” held on Sunday by the Sharjah Medical District.

According to the report, 1,911 students were found suffering from infectious diseases, 1,699 were found suffering from chicken box, 22 had hepatitis, and 27 had stomach worms.

Commenting on the report, a top official of the MoH, who did not want to be named, said the details had been drawn up based on the follow up list of those treated in hospitals.

The report also mentions that some 2,196 students were found obese, an alarming figure that called for immediate action. Moreover, obesity is on the rise among female students.

The MoH is planning to make it mandatory for schools to hire nutritionists to improve the food habits of students. The official also pointed out that the report had recommended imposing of hefty fines on schools violating the food standards.
