Lt. Col. Rashid Al Darmaki, Director of Civil Defence in Al Ain, told Khaleej Times that the firefighters managed to contain the blaze and prevent flames from spreading to about nearby 100 shops.“No one was injured as the market was empty at 4am while the fire broke out. But a shop owner had some trouble due to smoke inhalation. He was given first aid on the spot and was taken to the hospital for further medical care. His health condition is stable,’’ he added.
He indicated that the fire erupted 30 minutes before the dawn prayer and the fire engines from various Civil Defence centres were rushed to the market. They succeeded in containing the fire before it spread into other shops and thus averted a major disaster as these shops are full of inflammable materials.
“It took the firefighters two and half hours to put out the fire,’’ he said, adding that the cause of the fire is not yet known. — ade@khaleejtimes.com
