At least 11 people died and six others were injured, two of them seriously, in two separate road accidents in Andhra Pradesh on Monday, with one of the mishaps involving Pushkaram pilgrims.
In the first accident, eight persons including three women who were seated in a stationary autorickshaw were killed and four others were injured, two of them seriously, when a bus belonging to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) rammed into the parked vehicle. The accident occurred in Madhurawada mandal of Visakhapatnam district when the Rajahmundry-bound bus was trying to overtake another vehicle, police said.
Six persons in the autorickshaw died on the spot while two others succumbed to injuries while they were being shifted to hospital, police said. They said that there were 12 passengers in the autorickshaw when the tragedy occurred. The injured were admitted to a local hospital where the condition of two was stated to be critical. The bus driver surrendered before the police but an irate mob damaged the vehicle after the accident.
In another accident, three people from the south coastal Andhra district of Prakasam died when the vehicle in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary lorry on the national highway near Oblunaidupalem village in Prathipadu mandal. The victims were returning home after participating in the "Godavari Pushkaram" at Rajahmundry, police said.
