Eating out, poor hand hygiene and erratic weather may be among causes, say medics
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Right Angle Media Company are engaged in setting up of these bus shelters.
"Till date we have installed 500 AC bus shelters in different areas of the emirate. Out of these, 110 have become operational. The last bus station to become operational is in Abu Hail area," an official said.
"With the RTA increasing the number of public buses and routes, we expect 1,000 bus shelters to become operational by the end of this year," said Jim Davis, the Director of Operations of the Right Angle Media Group.
Earlier, Essa Al Dossari, the CEO of the Public Transport Agency at the RTA said that in the first phase of the project, 1,000 shelters would become operational, after which the next phases would commence.
"By the end of 2009, RTA would increase the number of public transport buses to 2,500 in a bid to encourage the residents to use public transport system more often. With the number of buses and bus routes increasing, the shelters also need to increase," stated Dossari.
The RTA has already announced that five new bus routes would be introduced in the emirate in the next three months. Also, 112 new buses, including double-deckers would start operations accordingly.
