The body colour varies from yellowish, grey, tan, with spots, which vary in number depending on species, from black to brown, while one particular species has rusty spots.

Some genets have a row of hair from the head to the tail that stands up when the animal is provoked. It is claimed that genets emit a musky smelling fluid from their anal sacs much like a skunk.

Genets can live up to 20 years, mature at two years and can produce litters of one to four. The gestation is 56-76 days depending on the species.
