A Tesla driver was filmed sleeping for at least 48kms on the busy 405 Freeway in Southern California as the car zoomed past on autopilot.
According to a report in nbclosangeles.com, the video was filmed by a passenger in a car next to the Tesla and shows the man dozing off as his car moved on cruise control. Shawn Miladinovich was alarmed when he saw the man in the Tesla slumped in the driver seat apparently sound asleep. "I'd seen it on the news before, I just couldn't believe I was actually seeing it," said Miladinovich, who called the California Highway Patrol.

To his shock, about 30 miles later on his way from San Clemente to San Pedro, Miladinovich said the man still appeared to be sleeping and had something tied around the steering wheel. "Eyes shut, hands nowhere near the steering wheel. If his little thing tied around that steering wheel fell off, and he was still sleeping, he would have slammed into somebody going 65 miles per hour," Miladinovich added.
Tesla's Autopilot feature allows partial automation and conditional automation but both require the driver to at least be ready to take control of the vehicle at all times.
