In our 'Hooked on Books' section, we talk to Shyam S, Head of Marketing and E-commerce, Centrepoint about books that inspired him in life.
What book(s) are you reading?
Connectography-Mapping the Future of Global Civilisations by Parag Khanna, which offers a unique vision of the future as a result of geopolitics, economics, demographics, environment and social identity. I'm also always reading autobiographies of some of the most talented yet controversial artists of this century. Fortunately, I live near Archie's Lending Library-and they have the most amazing book collection at dirt cheap rentals!
My father, a well-read man, has been a big influence in inculcating this love for books in me, as he used to bring Shakespeare tales to life by reading them to me.
Books or screen adaptations?
I have managed to see the movie adaptations of all my favourite fiction books. While movies cannot match the depth and quality of books, I must say that, with technology, some epics have found a match in their movie avatars - The Lord of the Rings being a great example.
A book that changed your life.
As with millions who have read it: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. The uncompromising beliefs of the protagonist Howard Roark were so inspiring that they became deeply ingrained in my DNA. Today, I can proudly say that incorporating some of Roark's virtues led to trailblazing work, which allowed me to make a big impact in almost every business I was involved in.
A book you believe is underrated.
Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats was a great book when it hit shelves in the mid-80's. It challenged linear thinking with parallel thinking methods in a structured way, allowing one to develop tactics for solving complex issues. I believe it's still relevant in today's world, which is more complex than ever before.
Your favourite book quote.
'Nothing that's worthwhile is ever easy' - Nicholas Sparks, Message in a Bottle. It's something I really believe in. The hard way is the right way and I hate those who think and act otherwise. More than anything, it's just so fulfilling.
