Dealing with sensitive skin

I am a 21-year old with brown patches on my nose, and I don’t know what caused it. I also have a dark complexion which is getting duller day by day. Can you suggest an easy remedy for fair and glowing complexion?-Name withheld

Make a very smooth puree from a raw potato; add corn flour and apply on the entire face. Rinse after 30 to 40 minutes with chilled water, and do this every day. The brown patches and skin tone will lighten soon.

My daughter is 8 ½ years old. She has thick hair but it is scanty on the forehead. Could you suggest a home remedy to increase hair growth? Her skin is also turning dark, especially her face, hands and shoulders.

— Shals

Please check if your daughter’s consumption of water is a minimum of seven glasses a day. She must have fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Add a few nuts like almond and walnut to her diet every day. A mask of almond milk on the face and hair thrice a week for an hour will lighten the skin and nourish her hair.

I am a fan of your column in wknd. and never miss your page in an issue. I am 25 years old and working as a receptionist in a reputed firm. I have lots of whiteheads on my nose and chin area that are really embarrassing. I use scrubs, but after 2-3 days, it appears again. Please recommend a home remedy. Also, I have very unhealthy hair. Please help.

— Susan

A simple yet effective home scrub is a mix of oats and rice power. Take 1 teaspoon of oats and rice powder and add enough water to make a paste. Apply to the nose and chin. When dry, scrub off in gentle circular movements. Rinse off with chilled water. Do this thrice a week to keep the skin smooth and healthy. I would also recommend you apply a thick yoghurt hair mask an hour before shampooing your hair as it is an excellent natural conditioner.

I am a 30-year-old mother of one. I have sensitive combination skin. If I wash my face with soap or gram flour, it becomes dry and if I don’t it becomes oily and produces pimples. Also, I have a lot of black pimple marks on my nose and chin. What should I do?

— Visha

I am not in favour of gram flour if your skin is sensitive. Add oats flour to aloe vera gel and apply this paste on the skin. Let this dry on your skin and scrub off after 30 minutes. Where you have marks, just dot coconut oil on them and leave them overnight.

My eight-year-old daughter has very dark facial hair on her upper lips. Please give me an easy herbal remedy to remove this. She is very conscious sometimes and cries because of it. I’ll be very thankful if you could tell me what to do.

— Sameena

Take 1 tsp cane sugar and a pinch of turmeric powder; add honey to make a scrub. After applying the paste to the upper lip, gently scrub against the hair growth. Let me warn you: it’s not going to be an instant miracle. It’s a slow but sure treatment. Be gentle, however, as your daughter’s skin will be delicate.
