Who: Andraya Farrag
What: Curator-Designer of women's wear label BEDOUIN
How do you typically start your workday?
With a very big coffee and a lot of emails! The rest depends on what stage of the collection I am at. I typically design in the afternoons and evenings, and pattern cut in the morning when there is a lot of light. If I have lots of inspiration, I can design into the early hours of the morning, with more coffee!
Describe your work in a sentence.
Encouraging style without borders. BEDOUIN is a combination of mini-mal silhouettes in luxurious fabrics that can take you from the city to the beach.
What is your #1 personal principle/success mantra at work?
Dreams don't work unless you do!
In your workday, what is the one thing you cannot do without?
My laptop! I never thought I could rely on a piece of technology so much, but it really is the key to everything!
Most challenging project to date?
Before launching BEDOUIN, I lived and worked in India as a fashion designer. I was based at a factory that produced for well-known luxury brands and found it very difficult to come to terms with the working conditions. However, I met some incredible people and it was also one of the best experiences of my life. We currently produce in Dubai with a fantastic production team. There is such a great vibe at the workshop and I couldn't be happier working with them.
Who's your role model as the perfect professional?
Victoria Beckham. I love how she is so involved with her brand. Although she was already a celebrity, she still designs for her brand and has the last say on everything. I also love her new flagship store on Dover Street in London. Probably one of the most incredible interiors I have ever seen.
Your favourite indulgence when you need a break from work?
Eating out or cooking is so relaxing and so far removed from work. Although when I really need a break from work, I love to travel. But even on holiday I find it very difficult to take an entire day off from working!
What is your greatest dream, professionally?
I hope to be able to grow BEDOUIN into an international brand and have the resources to work with charities from all over the world. BEDOUIN really is about being a global citizen, and so working with other people from all of the countries who inspire me would be a very special thing.
