It was in July that the Department of Transport - Abu Dhabi (DoT) and the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced about toll gate system on all four bridges leading to the city from October 15. But with just four days left for implementation, there are glitches in the system and issues upsetting motorists.
Motorists were asked to create an account on www.itps.itc.gov.ae to register vehicles and then top-up for payment. However, Abu Dhabi registered vehicles had automatic accounts being created and details like username and password send to the owner through an SMS. However, motorists in Abu Dhabi are yet to receive such an SMS.
"I had hoped to receive SMS today. Now I think it will be only by Sunday. I hope it is beyond that as there will be some procedures to follow and you don't want the network to breakdown," S.A., an Abu Dhabi resident said.
There are motorists from other emirates facing technical issues.
"I have tried many times to create an account but had issues with password confirmation. I tried customer care centres and emailed but so far have no solution," said M.N, an expat, from Ras Al Khaimah.
Another motorist from Dubai noted that he has issues while creating the account.
"I have tried several times to register but am unable to do so even today (Thursday). I could not even open www.itps.itc.gov.ae," he said.
10-day grace period
Motorists do have some cushion when it comes to fines. If a vehicle isn't registered by October 15 and crosses any of the toll gates, the motorist will be given a 10-business-day grace period to register into the system. However, fines for crossing the toll gate with a non-registered vehicle after the grace period will be Dh100 for the first day, Dh200 for the second day, and Dh400 for the third day, up to a maximum of Dh10,000.
