Two Indian death row convict in Qatar are moving the country's Supreme Court against the punishment handed to them by a lower court order for allegedly murdering an elderly Qatari woman.
In January last year, a court had held three Indians - Subramanian Alagappa, Sivakumar Archunan and Chilladurai Perumal - guilty of murder and awarded them death sentence.
With the help of the Embassy, the three Indians had filed an appeal in the Appeal Court against the Lower Court's verdict.
The Appeal Court in its judgement, upheld the Lower Court's verdict in respect of Alagappa and Perumal while commuting death sentence of Archunan into life imprisonment, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.
He said the three Indians were arrested in February, 2012 on the charges of murder of an elderly Qatari woman and that consequent upon award of death sentence, the Indian Embassy has taken up their cases, seeking an Emiri or a Royal Pardon.
"The Embassy has obtained a copy of the verdict, and a lawyer, hired by the embassy is making preparations for the Supreme Court Appeal in order to file it within the stipulated time," said Swarup.
