Spanish workhorse David Ferrer signed off his Mubadala World Tennis Championship campaign with a come-from-behind victory over two-time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka on Saturday.
The ability to fight for every point has been the hallmark of the 33-year-old Spanish player and he showed those qualities once again in the third place match at the Zayed Sports City Tennis Stadium during his 6-7 6-4 10-8 win.
"I am happy to have the finished the tournament with a win. It was a very close match today," Ferrer later told reporters in the post-match Press conference.
"I played aggressive tennis in the super tie-break and he made more mistakes in the key points."
Both players lost their serve twice in the first set, but Wawrinka hit some amazing winners in the tie break. The French Open champion was beginning to find his rhythm, but Ferrer once again found another gear, breaking the Swiss twice to take the match to the super tie-break. "It was a great tournament here in Abu Dhabi. I played a great match yesterday against Rafa (Nadal). Overall, I am happy that I won matches against top players. It's a great way to start the new season for me," Ferrer added.
"I always love playing in Abu Dhabi. You get great matches against the top players in the world. It's a great tournament. I hope to come back here again next year."
It was his second win in three games and the world number seven will now head to the Australian Open with renewed confidence.
First though he has to tackle a quality field at the Qatar Open next week where he is the defending champion. But judging by the way he played in Abu Dhabi and the fitness he showed, the 2013 French Open runner-up seems to be ready launch a successful bid for another title in Doha against the likes of Novak Djokovic, Nadal and Tomas Berdych.
"Last year was a great feeling for me in Doha. I played very well there and won the tournament. I don't mind being the defending champion as I am confident enough with my game now. Hopefully I will be able to play another great tournament against some of the best players in the world," the 33-year-old Ferrer said.
"My goal will obviously be to remain a top 10 player in 2016. It's not easy with so many great players around. But I will keep trying to play good tennis. And of course, the Olympics is another big goal."
