Jelena Jankovic is not the quite force she once was in women's tennis. The former world number one's career has suffered due to inconsistent form and a back injury. The Serb is sill a top-20 player, but her failure to keep pushing the top guns to their limits in the big events has disappointed her fans back home.
Jankovic will also have a massive hurdle to overcome at the Dubai Tennis Championships that get underway on Monday. She will play emerging Swiss star Belinda Bencic in the first round.
"I have played against Belinda a few times in the past. Last time we played, she beat me on grass but I beat her on hard court in the Indian Wells last year. I know her game very well and she knows mine. So it's going to be very interesting. It will be a difficult match, but obviously I will try my best to win," the 2008 French Open runner-up told us at the Dubai Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
"She (Bencic) is playing in the indoor tournament in Saint Petersburg. On the other hand, I arrived here few days back. I also played in the Fed Cup indoor in Serbia, but I am getting used to playing outdoor here under the sun.
"But you know every match is a new match and you cannot look at these outdoor-indoor factors. You just have to enter the court and focus on your own game and give your maximum."

Spreading love is the most important thing on Valentine's Day, former world number one Jelena Jankovic tells Khaleej Times. The Serb also showers praise on the city of Dubai.

The 30-year-old Jankovic says she still has ambitions to win the big events. "I am working very hard in training to reach a stage physically I want to be at. I am not there yet, but I am trying hard because my goal is to do well in the big events. At the moment I am really working hard to try to improve my game; to try to get stronger physically so I can do well in the big tournaments," she added. Jankovic first played in the Dubai tournament in 2005 and the city holds a special place in her heart. "I love Dubai. I have come here so many times to play this tournament. It's one of my most favourite cities in the world.
"There are nice beaches, great restaurants and nice shopping malls. I really enjoy my time every time I come to Dubai. I have no complaints, only complements for this great city."
