Sharjah - AWST is hosting 68 clubs from 16 countries and 1,000 athletes are taking part

Sharjah Sports Club sent an ominous warning to their rivals by outclassing Saudi Arabia's Jeddah United in the basketball event, on the first day of the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST).
Sharjah Sports Club turned on their 'A' game and made it pretty much a one-sided contest, winning 90-30. Sharjah Women's Sports Club produced an overwhelming display for their 60-point victory.
In a merciless and unceasing wave of attacks the Sharjah club looked in a different league to their opponents who will not only be looking to regroup, but re-build after such a one-sided match.
In another fixture, Jordan's Fuheis Club looked serious contenders for the final as they brushed aside an out-paced and outplayed Somali Mogadishu team with a 95-49 win.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Sporting Club had to dig deep into their reserves to get past Kuwait's Girls Club 87-71. It was a match that see-sawed from quarter to quarter, with Kuwait winning two of the 15-minute periods. And although they constantly looked like being in contention, they failed to keep up the momentum as the Egyptians began to pull away in the fourth quarter.
Fuheis club will be brimming with confidence after their stunning performance which left the Somali team looking decidedly downbeat. As a reflection of their outstanding team play, every member of the Jordanian squad found scoring opportunities, while the Mogadishu club relied almost solely on Balqees Abdul Aziz, who walked away with a tally of 25 points, more than half of her team's overall score.
Elsewhere, Egyptian Sporting Club dominated the fencing event, winning four medals on the day. They clinched two gold medals, a silver and a bronze.
Mariam Al Zuhairi clinched the Individual Open Foil category, while Nardeen Ihab Shawki was a winner of the Individual Open Epee. Sara Tamer Nono won a silver in the same category and Nourhan Osama Dosouki landed a bronze to round off an outstanding 1-2-3 on the podium.
In the Individual Open Foil category. Emirati Latifa Salem Al Hosani from the Sharjah Women's Sports Club won silver, while Bahrain's Maram Mohammed Abdul Rasool and Maha Al Dosari from the Al Halah Club claimed the bronze medals.
In the Women's Individual Open Epee, Algerian Yusra Zabouk from Mouloudia Club shared third place with Egypt's Dosouki.
AWST is hosting 68 clubs from 16 countries and 1,000 athletes are taking part. The event runs until February 12 and consists of nine disciplines - basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting, athletics, show-jumping and Karate for the very first time.
