Margao Sunrisers stole the show by winning football and cricket titles in the First UAE Sports Tournament for Goans organized by the International Sadguru Council by at the United Pro Sports in Al Quoz, here, on Friday.
In the football final, Margao Sunrisers downed Royal Challengers Bicholim with Babu and Paresh being the goalscorers. Babu was later named the best shooter for his four-goal effort while Paresh, who led Margao, was adjudged the best captain.
In the cricket final, Margao Sunrisers defeated Panjim Super Kings by seven wickets. Batting first, Panjim could manage only 15 runs in four overs and Margao overhauled the target in three overs. Margao's Nilesh Arolkar walked away with the best batsman award.
Two events - Tug of war and lobiani (lagorio) - indicated the organizers' drive to revive Goa's age-old games that have a high quotient of skills and marksmanship. Margao Sunrisers where again the team to beat as they won the lobiani competition. Ponda Knight Riders showed their strenght in winning the tug of war title at the one-day event under the supervision of Mittal Fadte.
Mahadev Fadte, who sponsored the tournament, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. Dr Swapnil Nagvekar compered and later proposed the vote of thanks.
