 Fazim Abdu Anzar (Fujairah) and Vasanth Kumar Rajendran (Abu Dhabi) won the under 12 and under 15 singles crowns respectively at the 39th ISC UAE APEX Open Badminton Tournament at the India Social and Cultural Centre, Thursday night.
Anzar defeated Naban Abdul Najeeb from Sharjah 21-8, 21-10 and Rajendran warded off the stiff resistance from Adarsh Dinesh Nair (Dubai) 21-19, 21-19.
"I have been training hard with my coach Avinash S. Kumar for the last two months for this tournament and am very happy to be the under 15 champion," said Rajendran, a Grade 9 student at Indian School, Abu Dhabi.
In the senior section, Abu Dhabi-based Rakesh Ramakrishnan, the defending men's doubles champion, partnering Raghav Bhatt, advanced to the men doubles semifinal. The pair had little resistance from Asep Adriyana and Shamsudheen Ibrahim in the quarterfinals before etching out a 21-16, 21-13 victory. In the semifinal, the Rakesh-Raghav will meet Alfas Kalam, and Waqas Ahmed.
In another men' doubles quarterfinal, experienced Avinash S. Kumar and Vinod Kumar defeated Endi Madullah, and Jaffer Ibrahim the Bahrain national singles champion, 21-17, 21-18.
