The India Club UAE Open multi-category badminton championships came alive again, this time during the weekend's round of matches.
The veterans and old-timers on the circuit here, provided thrilling fare at the club courts in front of an appreciable crowd.
Being 55 might be a wrong age to indulge in hard-hitting badminton where there is a lot of lateral movement, but the pairs in the above 45, 50 and 55 age group events, proved many wrong with a lot of court coverage and hard running.
First, Shafi Ul Mulk, owner of Global Hawk Imaging & Diagnostics, the sponsors, and senior club member Sunil Singh stormed into the semifinals of the veteran's doubles above 50 category. The duo defeated Girish Chand and Joseph Davis 21-13, 21-14.
Moving on to the title round phase, James Varghese and Vidya Manghnani beat Alam Syah and Rosaymay Asignor 21-16, 13-21, 21-8 to lift the veteran's mixed doubles above 45.
Long time toppers in the sport in the UAE - Varghese and Vidya - had to withstand the onslaught of the opponents when Alam's smashing hit peak levels in the second set, before wrapping up the issue with a certain amount of comfort in the rubber.
In the super veteran's doubles above 55 summit clash, Abdul Salam A. A. and Lal Mony defeated Aneesh Manirikandy and Suresh Menon 21-14, 21-15. - moni@khaleejtimes.com
