Calling on the residents of Dubai to build a robust community, Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, on Wednesday said that exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone.
He said this at the launch of The Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Community Sports Initiative at the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) office in Design District.
The Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, President of the National Olympic Committee and President of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards, Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the initiative and unveiled the logo.
Shaikh Hamdan called on the various sections of the community to respond in a positive manner to the initiative he said will go a long way in improving the health and happiness levels in the country.
"A robust Dubai community is what we expect to derive from this project," Shaikh Hamdan highlighted, adding: "That is why sports is one of the key sectors supported by the UAE leadership."
The main goal of the new initiative is to increase the numbers of those carrying out physical and sporting activities while placing Dubai as a modern metropolis.
The move under the umbrella of the nation's vision for the future is being initiated under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and will have six crucial initial elements over a three-year period.
The project will benefit the various health and fitness programmes already initiated by the various sections of the community in Dubai, including private participation.
"The main aim is to make health and happiness, essentials of daily living for the citizens and other residents. This will lead to the overall well-being of the society leading to positive energy that is bound to activate a system," he added.
"It's sheer team work that will be the energy behind this initiative and all departments, clubs, institutions and bodies belong to one single platform. For this we need to come together to build a healthy, happy and productive community with sports activity as the focal point," he added.
The first stage of the initiative has already seen not less than 10 government entities behind the project viz - DSC, Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Health Authority, Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Dubai Civil Defence, Community Development Authority, Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs and Dubai Media Incorporated.
The next stage of the project will see a range of six international recognized events that will be held shortly. The initiative also includes the Fitness Bus and the Dubai Fitness Index, which will be launched in 2018.
The programme will have ambassadors representing the various sections of the society.
Also attending the function on Tuesday were Mattar Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman, DSC, Saeed Hareb, General Secretary, DSC and other leading officials representing the public and private sectors.
