Darley Awards winners honoured

Valiant Boy SBFAR, a 4-year-old bred by Shaikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan was a double winner while Dutch connections dominated in Sundayís Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festivalís 26th Annual Darley Awards and the Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards respectively.

Valiant Boy SBFAR, with four wins and two second-place finishes in his seven starts won the Best 4-year-old Colt/Gelding in the US award and also won the Horse of The Year Award to dominate the Darley Awards.

Officials hail Shaikh Mansour, Shaikha Fatima’s support

Top officials from the Arab Women’s League, IFAHR and the Arabian Racing Cup in the US hailed the support of Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and Head of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood the Festival, in promoting Purebred Arabian racing around the globe.

“On behalf of the ARC Board of Stewards I thank Shaikh Mansour and Shaikha Fatima for hosting and orchestrating this important event,” said Denise Gault, Chief Steward of Arabian Racing Cup.

Dr Wadouda Badran, Consultant to the Supreme Council of Arab Women’s Organisation, said, “This is an outstanding event which symbolises the success and excellence of women in sport. I thank Shaikha Fatima for her dedicated efforts to empower women.”

IFAHR Chairman Sami Boenain said, “This is a historic event which brings together friends with a common passion – the Purebred Arabian horse, and I thank the UAE leadership for their initiatives in this direction.”

“The Darley Awards is recognition of the best Purebred horses and honours connections of Purebred Arabian horses - an aspect which reflects our role in promoting Purebred Arabian horses,” said Shaikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority in a message.

“The Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards, introduced last year, goes one step further in providing the much-needed impetus to women in Purebred Arabian racing. We congratulate all the winners and hope these awards will further encourage others to nurture and help the spread of Purebred Arabians horse racing,” he added. “Last year we have witnessed a historic step forward when the Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival unveiled the Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards for women associated with Arabian racing around the globe,” Noora Al Suwaidi, Secretary General, UAE General Women’s Union said.

In the Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards, three from The Netherlands walked away with the beautiful trophies with Germany’s Susanna Santesson earning the Lifetime Award for her services to ladies flat racing and the German Jockey Club. Karin Van Der Bos from The Netherlands won the Best Owner while her countrymate  Jadey Pietrawiscz (Best Jockey) and  Diana Dorenburg (Best Trainer) made it a Dutch dominance in the Shaikha Fatima Awards.

At a glittering ceremony hosted by well-known racing commentator Derek Thompson at the JW Marriot Hotel in Houston, Texas the Purebred Arabian fraternity came together to celebrate outstanding performances by horses and connections.

Abdul Rahman Al Jaber, Second Secretary at the UAE Embassy in the US, Dr Wadouda Badran, Consultant to the Supreme Council of Arab Women’s Organisation, Lara Sawaya, Director of the Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival and head of IFAHR ladies racing,  Sami Al Boenain, IFAHR Chairman, Jasim Abdul Mohsin Al Dossary, Assistant Under Secretary of Sports at the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, Ali Moosa Al Khamiri of Dubai Equestrian Club, Dr. Kinsman Wright of Arabian Racing Cup, Richard Lancaster of Shadwell Stud Director,  Stephen Bowey of Invest AD, Mansour Al Mansouri of the UAE Falconry Club, Margareet de Ruiter from the Dutch Arabian Racing, of the Genny Haynes-Director of ARO-UK, Michelle Morgan, Deborah Mihaloff, Denise Gault (Chief Steward) and Diana Waldron – all from the ARC were among those who gave away the attractive trophies to the winners of the two award series.
