Veteran Dettori pilots Galileo Gold to victory

Galileo Gold, ridden by Frankie Dettori, wins the St James's Palace Stakes at the Royal Ascot on Tuesday.

 
dubai - Veteran Frankie Dettori piloted Galileo Gold to a brilliant victory in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes (British Champions Series) at Royal Ascot - Britain's richest race meeting, at the Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England, on Tuesday
Cymric and Emotionless were fourth and fifth for Godolphin.
Earlier, Godolphin Racing began this year's meeting with a second place finish in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, the first race of six-race card.
Belardo, trained by Roger Varian and the mount of James Doyle, came half a length behind Tepin, who became the first American-based winner of the Queen Anne Stakes. Godolphin had two other runners in the race run over a mile and Richard Hannon's Toormore, ridden by Dubai World Cup-winning jockey William Buick, came in fourth, while Barchan, another one of Varian's charges, finished 12th out of the 13 horses in the field.
In conditions made difficult by rain, the American mare Tepin, trained by Mark Casse, negotiated the soft ground under jockey Julien Leparoux, to upstage the field. The four-year-old Breeders' Cup Mile winner also extended her winning streak to seven.
David Simcock's Lightning Spear, ridden by Oisin Murphy, finished third, while Godolphin's Toormore finished 3/4 lengths in fourth.
Tepin kept pace with the early leaders after which Leparoux asked more from her with a quarter mile to go. And she responded in fine fashion and nudged ahead to best Belardo at the post. Tepin became the first horse since Goldikova in 2010 to win the Queen Anne Stakes after winning the Breeders' Cup Mile. She has 12 wins so far from 20 starts and trainer Casse hinted that she might make the trip to Dubai next year.
Meanwhile, in the second race of the day - the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, Godolphin's Van Der Decken and Thunder Snow finished fifth and sixth respectively. The race run over six furlongs, was won by Caravaggio, who handed trainer Aidan O'Brien with a record eighth win in the race.
Van Der Decken was trained by P Twomey and ridden by Wayne Lordan, while Thunder Snow was the charge of Emirati trainer Saeed bin Suroor and the ride of James Doyle.
Godolphin's Jungle Cat, trained by Charlie Appleby and the mount of William Buick, finished fourth in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes (British Champions Series & Global Sprint Challenge). The race was won by Profitable, trained by Clive Cox and ridden by jockey Adam Kirby. It was a memorable win for Kirby, whose partner Megan had given birth to baby boy Charlie, just hours earlier.
