Lewis Hamilton stamped his authority at the 2017 British Grand Prix with a lead of 14 seconds over his team-mate Valterri Bottas. For the three-time World Champion, it is the fourth consecutive victory and fifth overall at Silverstone equalling Jim Clark's record and the 57th of his career.
For the Silver Arrows outfit it is only the second 1-2 finish this season and it came after the Ferraris had a last lap drama with their tyres. Despite the drama, Kimi Raikkonen who was running second limped back to third. Lewis' current win makes him trail only one point behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel.
For championship leader Sebastian, who was running fourth, it was a dramatic last lap when his tyres which were blistering for the last 20 laps gave away. And his late puncture compounded his terrible day but he finished seventh which earned him six points, and maintain the title lead by one point.
His team-mate Kimi who started the race second was running second, until he too had to pit on the penultimate lap with a puncture on his tyre. The Finn lost his second place to Valterri but was luckily able to come out in fourth place and Sebastian's losing third put him back on the podium. For Valterri, Ferrari's bad luck was a boon as he had started the race ninth due to a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change, but was seen charging up the grid. The young Finn has proved his ability to be a championship contender and secure his contract with the Silver Arrows for next year.
The 51-lap race had a few exciting moments at the start including a safety car period. Before the race could start, there was drama for local driver Jolyon Palmer who complained of a 'brake by wire' issue and later had a hydraulic failure. Palmer was asked to park his Renault to and the side, which lead to an aborted start and an extra formation lap for the rest of the grid.
At the start while Lewis and Kimi had a clean start, Vettel had a poor start dropping to a fourth behind Max Verstappen who jumped into third. Verstappen and Vettel swapped positions after pitstops but the final lap drama ended up in Verstappen finishing ahead of the German. The Dutch was followed by his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo who started the race in the last row at 19th place on the grid.
The first lap drama was between the two Toro Rosso's of Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kyvat which we have seen a several times this season. Daniil turned into Carlos' car in the middle of Becketts (Turn 11), resulting in the Spaniard retiring and the Russian getting a drive through penalty. The Russian will also be reprimanded two penalty points to his super license.
From the incident what is understood is that Daniil was trying to pass Carlos, and his style being too aggressive on the opening laps resulted in him shunting his own team-mate. The two have had similar run-ins before and this might not look good for the future of these two drivers in the Toro Rosso bull pen, as it is the second double retirement for the team.
Finishing sixth in the race was Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg who has had a good start to this weekend after starting fifth on the grid. Nico was running as high up as fourth but lost positions to the two Red Bull drivers, with Daniel being
