UAE boys down hosts Jordan, top standings

The UAE team top the standings with six points after two wins from as many games in the West Asian Football Federation Under-16 Championship being held in Amman, Jordan.
The UAE defeated hosts Jordan by a solitary goal in their second game of the tournament. They had defeated Palestine 3-2 in their opening fixture. All the matches are being played at the Petra Stadium in Al Hussein Youth City.
Five teams, the UAE, Iraq, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, apart from the hosts Jordan are competing in the championship. The Championship consists of one group and is being played on a round-robin league system. The team that tops the group will be declared champions. The tournament runs till August 6.
 After a goalless first half, the UAE broke the deadlock through a penalty scored by Ali Amro on 70 minutes. It was Jordan's second loss in the Championship after they were blanked 5-0 by Iraq in their opening game. Mohannad Ali had scored a hat-trick.
Earlier, in the opening game, the UAE went ahead through Rashid Al Hammadi on 10 minutes but the lead was short-lived as Malik Rashid got the equaliser for Palestine, two minutes later.
Yousuf Al Zaabi gave UAE the lead on 66 minutes but Palestine cancelled that out again through Motaz Al Hawrani in the 78th minute. The UAE, though, came away as victors after Majid Al Mahrazi converted a penalty, in the second minute of four minutes of stoppage time.
The UAE lead with six points from two wins, while both Iraq and Saudi Arabia have three points from one match each. Jordan and Palestine are yet to open their account.
The UAE, who are coached by Abdulla Al Shaheen, take on Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. The squad are also preparing for the AFC Under-16 Cup qualifiers, which is scheduled to kick-off in September.
In the other match, Iraq opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Mohannad Ali who then doubled the lead in added time in the first half.
Saif Khaled scored Iraq's third goal after the restart before Mohannad Ali completed his hat-trick on 64 minutes. Johar Abed rounded it off with the fifth, two minutes later.
UAE international referees Sultan Mohammed Al Marzouqi and Nasoud Hassan are officiating in the Championship. They were nominated by the referees committee of the UAEFA.
