Scotland coach Grant Bradburn's predictions on the eve of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier that his side with young hands and battled hardened men would do a good job came true, during their first assignment at the Grange Cricket Club, Raeburn Place in Edinburgh, on Thursday morning.
In the opening match of the tournament, the Scots showed a lot of drive and purpose in chalking out a thumping nine-wicket win over the UAE after batting through only half the quota of overs (110-1 in 10 overs) while chasing 109.
The 22-year old Scottish opener George Munsey (62 n.o., 32 balls, eleven 4s, one 6) added 96-runs with Kyle Coetzer (39, 16 balls, nine 4s) for the first wicket and completely overpowered hapless UAE attack. Left arm teenage spinner Mark Watt (3-28) and offie Michael Leask (3-20) caused the UAE downfall after the Scottish medium pacers contained them early.
"I think we had enough practice. Conditions were slightly different. It was a good wicket, but it was irresponsible batting. We need to learn quickly," the UAE skipper Mohammad Tauqir said in a post-match comment.
"It's a long tournament and we need to be a bit more responsible, especially in our batting department. We have good batters. I think we had a decent World Cup and today was just a bad day. We need to forget about it and move on. Too many shots too early on. I think it was a 150+ wicket and 109 wasn't good enough."
UAE coach Aqib Javed told Khaleej Times: "The pitch and conditions were good and we should have relied initially at the start of each batter's innings pushed into the gaps for singles and twos before venturing into bold adventurous shot making. Tomorrow's game (Friday) against Afghanistan will be crucial again and we are now in a position of a must win situation if we are to finish among the top two in the group."
Scotland captain Preston Mommsen in his post match interview said: "Always nice to start the tournament with a win. I think UAE got off to a pretty good start, but we knew if we hung in, they would present chances. We thought 160 would have been a tough target.
"Our spinners have been very good in the last few matches for us. I think spinners will have a big part to play in this tournament."
Actually, the UAE were off to a brisk start, one that saw them maintain a very healthy run rate of seven an over to reach 51-2 following the departures of Faizan Asif (10-ball 17) and Shahzad Mohammad (14 from 10 with a 6).
Shaiman Anwar (9) left when the UAE were 51-3 and was followed by opener Amjad Ali (14) in the pavilion for the UAE to suddenly find themselves in big problems at 58-4. This was compounded further as the Scots sent back Abdul Shakoor for one to place the visitors on 61-5. Leask surprisingly gave the ball appreciable amount of air to outfox Anwar and Shakoor.
Keeper batsman Swapnil Patil (6) was soon run out (66-6) and the UAE scoreboard read a poor 75-7 when Umair Ali (13 from 10 balls with a four and a six) tried to hit out of trouble as Leask claimed his third victim. Watt claimed UAE skipper Tauqir (4), caught behind by Matthew Cross as the tourists slipped to 80-8. Tailender Mohammed Naveed came up with 19 n.o. from 17 balls before the UAE closed shop at 109ao off 18.1 overs. The top six teams will make it to the main event world cup along with the elite 10 Test playing nations, in India in 2016.
