Sri Lankan batting legend Kumar Sangakkara, who retired from international cricket earlier this week, has a new job offer lined up for him by his country's President, Maithripala Sirisena.

According to media reports, he was offered a post of the Sri Lank high commissioner in the UK.

The offer came immediately after India's win in the second Test match in Colombo.

Complimenting Sangakkara on his contribution to Sri Lankan cricket and the sport, Sirisena said: "You have been a great honour to Sri Lanka before offering him the diplomat post."

Reacting to the job offer, the ever humble Sangakkara said: It was a surprise, I have to go and think about it and discuss with his excellency. I respect the offer made by the president. I don't have enough experience or knowledge to do a job like that."

Sangakkara has scored over 12,300 runs in 133 Tests, which place him fifth in the list of highest run-getters -- behind Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.

At 58.04 runs per innings, he, however, has outstripped all top four batsmen.

His 14-year career includes 38 centuries with his highest score being 319 against Bangladesh.

The Sri Lankan made his debut against South Africa at Galle, in July 20, 2000.
