A Saudi-based Filipina domestic helper was ecstatic when her employers showered her with luxurious gifts and Dh34,000 in cash for her service.
Mhai San Pedro, a 31-year-old overseas Filipino worker (OFW), received bags, shoes and Dh34,000 (500,000 Philippine pesos) to build her dream house. Many of the gifts San Pedro received include designer bags and shoes from Burberry, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, and Gucci. Her employers also helped with the treatment of her ailing daughter.
Mhai told The Filipino Times that she was blessed to find a foreign employer who treated her like family. The mother of three recalled that she only wanted to build a house for her children because they were living in a shanty and subsisting on eggs. On top of their living conditions, her family was deep in debt because her youngest daughter was born with a pulmonary disease. Her condition required frequent visits to the hospital which took a bulk of the family's meagre income. It was this difficult life back in the Philippines that prompted Mhai to work overseas.
Having worked for her employers for just eight months, Mhai said that she was being treated with generosity and kindness. Occasionally, they give her 2,500 Saudi riyals (Dh2,400 approx) to facilitate the construction of her house back in Pulilan, Bulacan. Apart from this allowance, she also recalled how her employer's entire family pitched in to pay for her daughter's medication after she was taken to the hospital. "Everyone in the family contributed - including their relatives. I felt hopeless that time and was in surprised when they gave me money for my daughter - I was overjoyed," Mhai said in Filipino.
According to Mhai, the Arab family she works for are living examples of good employers. To show her gratitude to them, she says that she strives to deliver the best service to their family.
