Embracing the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan, Skyline University College (SUC) cooperated with Sharjah's Labour Standards Development Authority (LSDA), to organise an Iftar dinner and cricket match for 250 Sharjah labourers.
The event, carried out through joint efforts of the university's Community Services Committee and Corporate Affairs Office, aimed at acknowledging the labourers' hard work and in recognition that they are unable to share a traditional Iftar dinner with their families back home. A cricket match, on the university's ground, followed the Iftar dinner. To promote social awareness and responsible social involvement, this event also brought together the alumni, students and parents, faculty and staff of the university.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Salem Yousef Al Qaseer, Chairman of the LSDA, said that charitable work is inspired by the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who laid the foundations for humanitarian approaches to be an integral part of the core values of the UAE.
Mohammed Abdu Salam, lecturer and chairperson of the Community Services Committee at SUC, said besides the Ramadan-specific events, the university takes part in various activities all the year to address different segments of the society. As part of an ongoing series of community initiatives, a cricket match is held every year for people who never get the opportunity to play on a cricket ground.
He added that allowing them to engage in a collective and fun activity helps bring the community together and shed light on different society segments.
Taking care of the elderly is also part of its initiatives.
The university's staff and students help out when visiting many old people's homes. They also contribute to various special needs centres and engage in organising fun days and activities at the university, he added.
