A total of 38 road fatalities were reported last year due to tailgating in Dubai. Indians topped the list of tailgaters, who caused 12 of the deaths due to this violation. They were followed by Pakistanis and UAE nationals. Most of the fatalities caused by tailgating took place on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.
From January to April this year, the Dubai traffic department recorded 14 deaths because of tailgating.
The General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police has launched a campaign targeting motorists who do not leave enough distance between vehicles. The campaign, which will be carried out for two months, aims to monitor drivers who commit this violation as they pose high risk to road users.
Brigadier General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director General of Traffic Department, Dubai Police, said the drive against tailgaters is one of the main awareness campaigns organized by the department on an annual basis.
He pointed out that 38 deaths were reported last year due to motorists who drove too close to vehicles in their front. He said that the Dubai Police issued 77, 137 tickets last year to tailgaters.
This year in April, 6,631 tailgating violations were recorded; in March 5,631, in February 4,972; and in January 4,898 violations.
The Director of the General Directorate of Traffic said that the fine for not leaving enough distance between the vehicles is Dh400 and the offender is issued 4 black points.
Al Mazrouei said that during the campaign targeting tailgaters the police will distribute awareness brochures, and lectures will be delivered in government departments, institutions, companies and others. Traffic exhibitions will also be held in shopping malls. The Directorate General of Traffic will also deploy patrols on the highways and other roads to check the offenders.A total of 38 road fatalities were reported last year due to tailgating in Dubai.
