If you measure a man by his honesty and uprightness, then Bangladeshi worker Jahir Rehman definitely stands tall.
The 42-year-old maintenance worker from Abu Dhabi who earns a monthly salary of Dh700 has safely returned a wallet with cash and cards he found on a park bench last Wednesday.
"I was on duty on Wednesday afternoon when I found a black wallet lying on a bench near the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce on the corniche. I knew the owner would come back looking for it. So I decided to wait at the spot," Rehman told Khaleej Times.
An hour later, a panic-stricken German expat, Andreas Krause came back and found his wallet safe with Rehman.
But a modest Rehman does not even think what he did was a big deal. "It does not belong to me. So I knew I had no right over it. I was only doing my duty when I returned it to its rightful owner," said Rehman married with three children. He has been working in the UAE for the last 15 years.
Krause on his part said he was ever thankful to the worker. "I cannot even begin to imagine the hassle if I had lost the wallet. All my documents including my German and UAE driving Licence, credit and debit cards and health Insurance, were in the wallet," said Krause who works for a government company.
He said he was taking his lunch al fresco on a bench at the park and only realised he had forgotten the wallet after returning to work.
"He is a real hero. I am so touched by his honesty," said Krause.
Krause gave him a monetary reward for his honesty.
