An Abu Dhabi resident has been sentenced to four years in jail for threatening to publish nude pictures of his fiancée on social media because the woman allegedly refused to marry him.
The Pakistani man met the Moroccan woman on Facebook five years ago and the pair reportedly started dating. The man asked the woman to marry him and she allegedly accepted his proposal, official court documents said.
She also sent him pictures of her through social media. The woman, who was apparently staying in Morocco, asked the Pakistani to first speak with her father about their proposed marriage, which he reportedly did.
She later sent him a letter showing that her father had accepted their relationship. The man started allegedly splurging on her and later brought her to the UAE. When she reached here, the woman went and stayed with her relatives in Abu Dhabi.
The man asked her to formally solemnize their marriage by signing the marriage papers and also take them to the relevant authorities to be endorsed. However, the woman allegedly refused to marry him. He then threatened that he would publish her pictures on social media.
The woman went to the authorities and filed a complaint against the man. Prosecutors charged him with threatening to publish the woman's pictures on social media.
Officers also charged both of them with beautifying the sin for spending time together without being legally married.
The man had, however, denied the charges stressing that the woman was soon to become his wife and that her father had endorsed their marriage.
His lawyer said his client didn't make any threats to the woman. He argued that when the contents of his mobile phones were checked, no threatening messages were found.
Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance convicted him basing of evidence presented by prosecutors.
The court gave him four years in jail for threatening to publish the woman's pictures and another one year in jail for beautifying the sin.
The Moroccan woman was sentenced a year in jail for beautifying the sin.
