The Sharjah Police nabbed an Asian woman beggar - who wore an abaya and posed as an Emirati - while recovering Dh10,000 from her possession.
Colonel Ibrahim Al Ajl, director of criminal investigation department, said the Asian woman used to visit shops in a commercial area and made a good amount of money. The shopkeepers didn't bother to inform the police about the illegal practice even though they should have, he added. The Asian woman was caught during a regular police inspection and the cops were shocked to find Dh10,000 in her possession, the director added.
He said there has been a drop in the number of beggars on Sharjah streets and this could be attributed to the sustained efforts of the police. Colonel Ibrahim Al Ajl pointed out that there's a specialised team headed by officers to arrest beggars.
Most of these beggars roam around traffic signals, parking lots, markets and mosques, while some can come knocking on your door, the director said. People should cooperate with the police and report the department if they come across beggars by calling 80040, he pointed out.
In June, a beggar who had Dh45,000 stashed away in his artificial limb had been arrested in Dubai. The police had also recovered an additional Dh55,000 from him - taking the total amount recovered to a whopping Dh100,000. The beggar - an Asian man in his sixties - was picked up by a police patrol on the first day of Eid Al Fitr after the Friday prayers in Al Quoz.
