Manager jailed for defrauding workplace of Dh367,500

Dubai - He allegedly stole 50 receipt forms from an affiliated company

A manager, who stole a receipt booklet from his workplace and collected more than Dh367,000 from customers, was sentenced to one year in jail.
The Court of First Instance convicted 43-year-old manager of forgery, embezzlement and fraud charges on Sunday. It also ordered his deportation.
The accused, who holds a Dominican Republic passport, worked for a company that offered immigration services.

He allegedly stole 50 receipt forms from an affiliated company which belonged to the same owner, and collected large amounts of money from customers without putting it on books.
A complaint against the manager was registered at Al Muraqqabat Police Station in May last year.
"I was out of the UAE when my accountant contacted me in August 2014 to tell me that a receipt booklet was missing from my other company located in Port Saeed. I told her to inform the financial and legal affairs section to cancel it," the company's owner, a Cypriot national, said.
"However, in February 2016, an Emirati businesswoman checked with my company regarding a statement about the transactions done for her. It was then learned that the manager on trial collected and embezzled two amounts $10,000 and $13,000, belonging to the businesswoman.

"The businesswoman complained and the dispute was then settled at the police station after he paid her the money back and pledged in writing to settle any financial obligations that might appear in the future," the company owner added.
However, to make sure that the manager did not defraud any other customers, the administration contacted them. It transpired he collected amounts, in dollars, equivalent to Dh367,500 which he did not put on records but rather expropriated.
The company owner then complained against the manager at the public prosecution accusing him of stealing the receipt booklet and misusing it for his personal profit. The owner added that the manager was not entitled to collect money or issue receipts to customers at his companies.
The ruling may be appealed.
