A former Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai employee has been sentenced to six months in jail after being accused of illegally issuing 180 driving licences.
The 36-year-old Emirati man was accused of opening bogus files for people applying for driving licences and then issuing the licences without going through the standard procedures, which include passing the driving tests and presenting the necessary documents.
The former employee was found guilty by the Court of First Instance on charges of forgery and using forged electronic documents.
The court ordered him to pay Dh150,000 fine. The wrongdoings took place in and prior to 2011.
"I was assigned with verifying the authenticity of eight driving licences in 2011. Al Qusais police had sent us a letter regarding those licences. After double checking them I found they were fake. They were processed through the defendant's user access privilege," an officer at the licensing institution, RTA, said.
"I reviewed the archives and found that the holders of those licences did not have traffic files and driving license numbers in the system. No personal documents on the relevant individuals were stored in the data system".
The officer added: "By tracking the transactions processed by the employee in question, I found that he issued unlawfully 173 other driving licences which were all fake.  Every employee has his own user name and password to access the electronic system. There is no way his password could have been hacked as we have a solid protection software in place.
"On March 30, 2015, an Asian man visited the RTA to apply for a replacement of his driving license. He was one of the individuals who obtained their driving licences illegally. The Asian claimed a Pakistani man gave him the driving license for Dh17,000," the officer told the prosecutor.
