A new open heart surgery programme was started for the first time in the industrial area of Mussafah by Al Ahalia Hospital recently. Before this, patients had to travel several kilometres to Abu Dhabi even in cases of emergency.
On August 7, a successful quadruple vessel bypass surgery was performed on a 52-year- old supervisor without any significant illnesses in the past.
According to Dr Santosh Mathew, consultant cardiac surgeon who was senior consultant and head of cardiac surgery in Al Qasimi Hospital for 12 years, the patient had been unwell for about three months and complained of chest discomfort on walking.
"He was diagnosed with critical coronary heart disease due to multiple blocks in the blood vessels of his heart by coronary angiogram.
His bypass surgery was performed by specialist cardiac surgeon Dr Nirav Sangani. The patient has made fast recovery and is ready to be discharged.
The team also performed the second quadruple bypass surgery on a 30-year-old man who had a significant family history of heart disease using double arterial grafts which are proven to have superior long-term results.
The new facility offers round-the-clock cardiac services and is expected to be of benefit to residents of the industrial and surrounding areas in emergency situations.
