The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) launched a new app that will allow residents to donate blood to people in need, officials said on Sunday.
Donors will be able to register their information on the Dubai Blood Donation Centre app. During emergencies, the smart app will send notifications once a certain blood grouping is required at a certain donation centre.
"The app aims to speed up the donation process through allowing donors to answer donation eligibility questionnaire and read pre-donation educational material through their phones before visiting the donation center," said Waleed Al Dhuhoori, head of corporate application system at DHA.
"Now that the process is manual, it takes time. There's no official database of donors' information," said Al Dhuhoori.
While the app is now available for users, added features of the app and system will be officially complete in November.
Al Dhuhoori added that the app will help residents locate the nearest blood donation centres through their phones.
Through the new technology, donors will also be updated with activities and campaigns related to blood donation.
"The smart app will inform donors about their next donation date," he said. The system was one of many smart applications that DHA launched during GITEX this year.
"The app will help avoid human errors and will add an extra layer to transfusion safety," he said.
