Doctors from Rashid Hospital reattached a woman's three fingers which she lost in a firecracker incident during the Diwali celebrations in October.

Dr Khalid Al Awadhi, consultant hand and plastic surgeon and head of the hand surgery unit at Rashid Hospital said the woman, who is in her late 30s, arrived at the hospital's ER in great pain.

"While she was attending a Diwali ceremony someone put a firecracker in her hand as a joke. The lady did not react fast so it exploded in her hand causing her to lose her thumb and two fingers along with their skin."

Dr Al Awadhi said the women lost the thumb, ring finger and middle finger of her right hand. He said the woman was immediately sent to the operation theatre where her thumb was reattached following a five-hour surgery. "After two days we also reattached her two fingers and took skin from her abdomen to cover them," he said.

Dr Al Awadhi added that the women recovered from the successful surgery and was discharged from the hospital. He added that this was possible thanks to the hospital's specialised team and hand surgery unit at Rashid Hospital.

Dr Al Awadhi said the patient will be able to move her fingers after the physiotherapy sessions. He also added that she will need cosmetic surgery for her fingers in three months.

Al Awadi warned the public against the dangers of firecrackers as they can cause serious injuries, similar to those suffered by the woman.
