Wallpapers can add that nice view to any space. Why not do that to televisions?
LG Electronics did (almost) exactly just that, unveiling a TV that is so thin it can be attached to a wall like you would do with wallpaper and, to the strictest sense, is bendable to a certain degree.
The 'Picture-on-Wall' LG Signature OLED TV W, the South Korean company's latest offering in its premium TV segment, which was unveiled in January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, was launched in Dubai on Wednesday. And it definitely doesn't come cheap.
The new home entertainment device clocks in at a super-slim 2.6mm and can be attached to walls using magnets. The almost bezel-less design also gives the illusion of looking out a window.
Boo Kim, general manager of LG Electronics Gulf's TV division, likened the new TV to when the smartphone was still in its nascent stages; it was bulkier but gradually arrived to the design as we know it today.
"Ten or 15 years ago, TVs were so fat, then. they became thinner and more advanced. There's a paradigm shift happening with today's OLED technology," he told Khaleej Times during the event.
He said that OLED is today's must-have technology, due to the many benefits it brings to the table - rather, to the screen, including a brighter display, unmatched colours and overall immersive experience.
Kim said it has been two years since LG started tinkering with OLED technology, "but we were not yet confident back then" since it was new at the time. Since then, LG has "accumulated a lot of technologies" to come up with new offerings.
Kim also acknowledged that its competitors, including Sony, Panasonic and its neighbour Samsung, will come out with cutting-edge technologies, and it will only raise the bar for manufacturers to churn out better products for consumers.
Thinner, anyone?
Asked on whether the TV industry can go thinner, Kim offered an honest answer. "I'm not sure," he said. "At the moment - in terms of thinness - this is the maximum we can go."
However, with technology continuing to advance every day, he says it's not far-fetched that TVs can indeed go thinner - basically not a matter of if, but when. He doesn't even discount the possibility of creating TVs that are bendable or foldable.
Compared to conventional flat-screen TVs, the connecting ports for the LG Signature OLED TV W can be found in the premium sound bar that comes with Dolby Atmos - a first in TVs - that comes with it, greatly contributing to its thin design.
The new TV - as well as LG's other OLED line-ups for 2017 - supports the full palette of HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Hybrid Log Gamma, and are also ready to support Advanced HDR by Technicolor.
