The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah is to have a new bridge parallel to the Al Kof Rotana Bridge at the entrance of the emirate to ensure traffic flow and curb road accidents.
Eng Ahmad Al Hammadi, director of the RAK public works and services department, said the entrance of the emirate has seen four road accidents in a week.
"The RAK traffic and patrols department in collaboration with the RAK public works and services department had a meeting to identify the reasons behind these mishaps, and find ways out."
It has been proposed to build another bridge parallel to the current Al Kof Rotana Bridge, he added. "The direction of the vehicles is also to be diverted to put an end to traffic congestion."
The arterial road is to be entirely re-planned, particularly under the major bridge, Eng Al Hammadi stated. "Further solutions are to be proposed and discussed by the joint roads committee of both departments."
Col Ahmed Al Naqbi, head of the traffic engineering section at the traffic and patrols department, RAK police, said four road accidents have been reported in a week under the bridge.
"These included a serious turn-over accident which was blamed for the road imbalance and driver's inability to identify the correct lane."
The Al Kof Rotana Bridge is of one lane for those heading from the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah to the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road, he elaborated.
"The proposed bridge is to be linked to the current bridge but for the drivers heading to the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah."
The RAK Traffic and Patrols department spares no effort to ease drivers' suffering and ensure all road users' safety, he underlined. "This is in line with the incessant expansion of the emirate."
