Abu Dhabi residents got a new form of public transport on Monday, a passenger ferry that connects the Western end of Abu Dhabi Corniche with Yas Island and Maqta bridge. Named after traditional Emirati wooden diving boat, Jalboot, it takes three hours to complete the 100-kilometre waterway circuit.
For now, the service will run twice daily, starting and ending the service at Abu Dhabi Mall between 2pm and 9pm. By next year a full day schedule and more stops will be added.
The ferry is meant for commuting passengers as well as for tourists to have a scenic tour of some of the capital's main attractions.
The ferry is a modern jet-powered catamaran with 40 passenger seats, two standard wheelchairs and three seats for crew members, all fully enclosed, but with windows to take in the views. The cabin is fitted with air condition and leather seats, and, during travels, light refreshments are served to passengers.
Payment options include online booking, which are actually encouraged. A return ticket starts from Dh35 if booked in advance, while on the spot purchase would mean an extra Dh5.
Provided by Jalboot Marine Services, a local company founded by Emirates Consortium, the ferry will start daily from 2pm at Abu Dhabi Mall with stops at Etihad Towers near Marina Mall, Yas Marina and Fairmont Bab Al Bahr near Maqta bridge.
Bookings are available through website, www.jalboot.ae.
