The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) is planning to reduce wastage of water by 30 per cent, said a top official.
Dr Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of the authority, said that with the support of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the SEWA is planning to implement best practices in the field of water conservation. The authority, in coordination with international companies, is working on reducing the water wastage due to leakages in pipelines in order to achieve 30 per cent of water consumption rationalisation.
Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of a meeting held on Sunday with a visiting Singaporean delegation to discuss the methods of upgrading water networks and reducing the wastage due to leakage, Dr Al Leem said that the authority is making great efforts to achieve sustainability and declare Sharjah as city of rationalisation.
He said that as part of its strategic plan and vision of 2020, the SEWA works on evaluating the function of water networks to minimise the wastage. "The water networks in Sharjah stretch over 3,000km and carry 110 million gallons daily. It works based on international technical standards using environment-friendly materials to ensure quality of water," he said.
Highlighting the innovative projects that aimed at achieving sustainability in the field of water supply, Dr Al Leem said that the first project includes a system of storing ground water in spread areas, which could be used in the time of high demand or emergency. The second innovative project includes devices to detect the internal leakages in residential buildings and on premises of government and private institutions.
He noted that the authority is implementing international standards in water production and distribution.
