The Sharjah Police are investigating the accident in which a heavy truck crashed into a number of commercial outlets in Al Khan, at night on Wednesday. The accident caused minor injuries to four people. The driver has been arrested and is being interrogated by Al Buhairah police.
Police officials said exhaustion and lack of sleep could be the main reason behind the accident which caused great loss to a cosmetics and floral outlet. A pharmacy and a sweet shop next to it were also damaged.
The police said the truck turned towards Al Khan road and crashed into the shops. The police said they received a call at around 11:00pm about the accident and immediately dispatched the ambulance, traffic police and patrols.
Eissa Badawi, a witness, said that he had gone down from his apartment to buy shawarma for the children, and he saw the speeding truck diverting crashing into the shop. “It could have proven disastrous if people were in these shops. The accident happened after all shops had closed for the day,” he said.
The owners of shops at the site have urged the authorities to install metal bumps to prevent such kind of accidents.
