The Federal Electricity and Water Authority, or Fewa, opened a new substation in Ras Al Khaimah on Monday in a bid to ease power overloads and repetitive outages during summer.

The new power substation at Ghalila area is one of a series of substations recently opened in the northern emirate, according to Mohammed Saleh, director-general of Fewa.

"The new power substation will fulfil the electricity needs of Ghalila residential area, Shaam area and part of the Industrial Khor Khuweir area and in its vicinity to the north of Ras Al Khaimah."

Saleh said the Dh27.2 million substation has a capacity of 75MVA. "The 33/11KV-voltage substation contains three transmitters, six feeders and three switches."

"The power substation will meet the needs of existing and future residential, commercial and industrial areas, reduce pressure on current stations and help address complaints about insufficient power and repetitive power cuts."

The new Ghalila power substation will reduce the load on the Shaam power substation and ensure its durability and continuity, he added.

"The substation will be connected with three 33KV-voltage circuits from the Khor Khuweir substation and two 33KV-Voltage circuits from the Shaam substation."

The new facility will provide electricity to a number of stations, including the old and new water distribution station, water desalination station and water pumping station connected with the main water network, Saleh informed.

"Another power substation is under construction at the Dheit hospital to support infrastructure and expansions in Ras Al Khaimah," he said, urging the public for better communication with the authority at its toll free (8003392) round-the-clock number during emergency situations.
