Whereas some mysterious crimes are hard to solve out, this is not the case with Johny, the expert trained dog with the K9 squad of the Ras Al Khaimah police.
Most recently, Johny the 'Tracer', as also known here, has managed to successfully track down a burglar in a record time though he vanished in nowhere after trespassing on a house here.
Col Khalid Al Marri, head of the security inspection section, RAK police, said they were alerted about a trespasser, following which they rushed to the scene, but the suspect was already gone.
"Though we initiated intensive investigation and search, we could not track down the burglar who later proved to be a dangerous thief with a notorious criminal record."
The masked suspect, Asian, trespassed on the said house early on Sunday at 3.45am, and tried to get into one of the rooms through an open window, but ran away when he saw the owner of the house, as reported to the RAK police, he added.
"The K9 squad rushed to the scene, and Johny, the Tracer police dog, started its most favoured job tracking down the suspect from the wall of the house to the rest of the house, and then to a narrow alley where the burglar was hiding."
It took Johny ten minutes only to locate the hideout of the suspect, who proved to be an illegal resident, Col Al Marri pointed out. "The criminal investigation men arrested the thief referred him to the public prosecution for further interrogation and legal action."
Col Al Marri said they spare no effort in training all the police dogs they have on all possible missions, spanning drugs, explosives, burglars, and other criminals. "Our K9 squad is all set for any mission."
Official records show that the K9 unit managed to solve 381 crimes last year. "They are trained to look for drugs at different areas, including farms, houses, vehicles, and baggage, no matter how difficult it is," Col Al Marri told Khaleej Times.
Police dogs also play an important role in detecting explosives at the airports, conferences, critical departments, and other functions and gatherings, he stated. "They also help detect banned stuff at the punitive and correctional institution here, and are used in rites and demonstrations."
There are so many police dogs, he said. "On top of these is the Labrador Retriever dog which has 250 million smelling cells against 220 million for the German Shepard."
