Centre to offer holistic healthcare in Abu Dhabi

Olivia Olarte-Ulherr / 20 December 2012

A new wellness centre that combines cutting-edge, scientific-based Western medicine with Eastern alternative modalities is due to open in the Capital in March 2013.

The DNA Centre for Integrative Medicine and Wellness Centre is the first of its kind to offer a “holistic approach” to treatment in the Gulf region, and is the flagship centre of the US-based DNA Health Corp.

The leasing agreement was signed with the Abu Dhabi Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) in July to establish the 10,000-square feet centre at the five-star St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi.

“‘DNA for Life’ is the name of our programme. DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is the blueprint of human life. This model is a complete lifestyle plan based on your particular genetic make-up. That is why it is so unique,” Dr Nasim Ashraf, chairman and CEO of DNA Health Corp., explained.

The facility will include services such as the treatment and reversal of metabolic syndromes like diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

“We are doing genome testing that has not been offered to individual patients anywhere till now. Genome testing tells us how to make a lifestyle plan... specific guides that you should be on (such as) exercise programmes and gene therapies,” he told Khaleej Times.

“We are not an acute care hospital,” he said. The centre will form “collaborative relationships” with other hospitals. “We want to have partnerships with the local hospitals so that we can support them. If (a patient) needs rehab we can do rehab, but we will send (the patient) to them for acute care.”

Other key offerings of the centre include cosmetics and bio-aesthetics or age-management and beauty treatments.

The centre is expected to attract the majority of its clients from the UAE and the GCC, as well as, Russia, Europe, the Far East, India and Pakistan, who will spend one to three weeks “for a complete spiritual, physical and mental rejuvenation.”

“This is going to be a service (that is) truly cutting-edge. All these services under one roof has never been offered anywhere in the world,” Dr Ahsan Malik, Chief Operating Officer and Project Director of DNA Health Corp. stated. The concept for the wellness centre was developed last year and will officially open next year.

It will boast some of the leading names in medicine and non-traditional therapies including naturopathic physicians and spiritual coaches.

“The global health and wellness tourism segment is currently a US$100 billion industry, projected to grow to US$1 trillion within the next decade. The opening of the facility is a fundamental step in opening Abu Dhabi up to this multi-billion-dollar industry,” said Sultan Al Dhaheri, Tourism and Corporate Planning Section Head, Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi).
