The Abu Dhabi eGovernment became the inaugural recipient of "Smart Government Award" launched by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) User Conference held in United States of America last week.
The two-day knowledge sharing event held in San Diego, California, on July 21 and 22, brought together representatives from different government bodies across the world who attended workshops conducted by geographic information system (GIS) organisations and professionals.
The Abu Dhabi eGovernment was chosen for the 2015 award for its efforts in implementing spatial data infrastructure (SDI) and use of geospatial information across a wide range of government entities in the emirate.
Rashed Lahej Al Mansoori, director- general at Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (ADSIC), said: "We are honoured to receive the 2015 Smart Government Award, as it is a testament by the experts in the GIS community."
"It has also been proven we could improve the lives of our beneficiaries with notable achievements made in areas like natural disaster and health hazard detection, and the protection of Abu Dhabi's unique desert landscapes, coastal environments and historical sites, to name a few."
Jack Dangermond, president of Esri, said: "Abu Dhabi's SDI initiative is an example of what can be accomplished by a nation that recognises the many benefits that can be derived through the cooperative use of geospatial information. I am very pleased to honour them with our first Smart Government award."
Saeed Al Mansoori, executive director Shared Government Services at ADSIC and Khawla Al Fahim, executive manager, Spatial Data Centre, ADSIC, jointly received the award on behalf of the Abu Dhabi government. More than 15,000 foreign delegates visited the Abu Dhabi Pavilion on the first day of the event. reporters@khaleejtimes.com
