Ras Al Khaimah — The Public Works and Services Department in Ras Al Khaimah has started the one-month construction work of a walkway in Al Muairidh area.

The 500-metre-long and six-metre-wide walking and jogging stretch will also have 130 parking spaces and a concrete barrier, according to a top official.
Ahmad Al Hammadi, Director of the department, said the project will be completed by the end of this month and it also includes the construction of a road island to separate vehicles.
“The project is part of the department’s plans to develop public facilities and services and enhance the image of the city in line with the development programmes underway in the emirate.”
The pathway will be a hub for residents, visitors and tourists with diverse utilities and facilities that suit the old and young alike, he added.
“We have already finished the first phase of the project which involved paving the walkway. The public will enjoy their time without being bothered by the vehicles that used to be wandering along the beach.” Al Hammadi said rest houses, commercial kiosks, benches and on-beach showers will be fitted as well to make the walkway more enjoyable and convenient to beach-goers.
“The concrete wall will hold back the moving sand, break the force of advancing waves, and protect the beach from erosion.”
Several underground pipes will be laid under the wall to drain rain water, prevent any possible harmful impact on the packed layers of dust under the road, and curb traffic accidents, he noted.
Meanwhile, the department, in collaboration with the emirate’s police, has opened the Qarm-Oman road intersection, locally known as Istanbul intersection.
“Such a move coincides with the opening of a part of the new Gasidat-Shaml road under construction which extends from the Fanus intersection to the newly opened intersection in both directions,” Al Hammadi stated.
The opened intersection, to enhance traffic flow, connects the Qarm road with the Guwais area right up to the RAK Department of Preventive Medicine in one direction, and links the Fanus intersection with Al Nakheel area in the other, he elaborated.
“The arterial intersection is equipped with smart sensors which automatically opens traffic signals in the more congested direction of the road if the lanes ahead are clear.”
